Major parts of a festive event this weekend have been cancelled.

Organisers All About Barrhead (AAB) announced the “difficult decision” ahead of their winter wonderland tomorrow (Saturday, November 23).

The event had been set to feature outdoor Christmas market stalls and funfair rides, but these will no longer be going ahead due “predicted high winds.”

In a post on Facebook, a spokesperson for AAB, which is the local business improvement district, said: “Sadly, due to the predicted high winds, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to call off the outdoor market and funfair section of our Winter Wonderland event this year.

“The Grinch has struck again, and he's not just stolen Barrhead's Christmas tree, he's also stolen the fun.

“But don’t worry, we’re still bringing the festive cheer to Barrhead.”

Despite the cancellation of the market and rides, several parts of the event are still going ahead.

Santa's Grotto will still be open in the Foundry from 12 to 5pm, with a special quiet hour for those who prefer a calmer experience from 11am to 12pm.

Kids’ Crafts will also be taking place at Barrhead library from 12-5pm and free Face Painting will be available at the Foundry from 12 to 5pm.

Starting on Saturday and running all week, residents will also have the chance to take part in a scavenger trail, with £50 up for grabs.

“We may have lost some of our outdoor fun, but there’s still plenty of Christmas magic to enjoy indoors,” added the spokesperson.

“Come along and join us in the heart of Barrhead for a wonderful time.

“The Grinch himself will be causing his usual chaos around town, so watch out, he might try to steal your Christmas spirit, but don't worry, he loves a good photo op.”
