The completion date of a major project, which has shut a busy road since January, has been revised.

East Renfrewshire Council has announced a revised completion date of summer 2025 for its Aurs Road improvement works.

The £22.68 million transformation of Aurs Road between Barrhead and Newton Mearns began in January, with the route originally set to be closed for 12 months.

To allow the work to take place, we reported how the road has been shut since then.

It is closed from the junction of Springfield Road in Barrhead to the junction of Stewarton Road in Newton Mearns.

A series of factors, however, have all had an impact on construction according to the local authority.

Now, the council has revealed the huge project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025 - several months after its original completion date of December 2024.

The delay means the road will remain closed for several more months.

The planned improvement works are set to 'transform' Aurs Road from a winding, single carriage road to a safer, straighter road with a new active travel route and waterside promenade overlooking the Balgray Reservoir. 

According to the local authority, the site is 'fully operational and significant progress' is being made on the development of the new road.

A spokesperson for the council said: "Aurs Road is a major infrastructure project and we have encountered additional complexities.

"Some ground conditions have not been as expected from the site investigations undertaken before the start of the project, we have had to move unmapped existing utilities, the summer weather has been unusually wet and we have excavated and removed a former water works, uncovered as the site was prepared for construction.

"These have all delayed progress."

"We appreciate the inconvenience this delay and the extended road closure will have on local residents and thank everyone for their patience. 

"We are working closely with the contractor and project managers to mitigate the delay and will provide more specific updates on progress in the new year.

"Once complete, Aurs Road will have a transformative impact on the local area for generations to come."

The multi-million-pound Aurs Road project is being funded through investments from the Glasgow City Region City Deal (with contributions from the UK Government, Scottish Government and East Renfrewshire Council), Transport Scotland through Sustrans' Places for Everyone programme, the Scottish Government's Bridge Fund and developer contributions from new house building projects in the area.

It comes after we reported how East Renfrewshire Council were working to determine a revised timescale for the Aurs Road project following “extremely wet weather conditions”.
