A care home has been branded ‘weak’ by inspectors who described several areas in the facility as “visually dirty, untidy and malodourous”.

Millview Care Home in Barrhead received an unannounced inspection between August 26 and August 28 this year.

The results of the visit, which was carried out by three inspectors, have now been published by the Care Inspectorate.

The Carlibar Road home was rated as “weak” across five categories based on a six-point scale where 1 is unsatisfactory and 6 is excellent.

The categories assessed included ‘how well do we support people's wellbeing?’, ‘how good is our leadership?’, ‘how good is our staff team?’, ‘how good is our setting?’ and ‘how well is our care and support planned?’.

The inspection took place just over a year after a previous inspection in August 2023 which saw the home rated as a 5 or very good for ‘how well do we support people’s wellbeing?’ and a 4 or good for the other four categories.

In the category ‘how good is our setting’, the latest report, however, said: “People who live in the home should experience a high quality environment.

“Whilst, on entering the home we found the downstairs unit to be overall visually clean, tidy and odour free.

“However, we found several areas in the upstairs unit, including the stairway, bedrooms, communal hairdressers, bathroom, lounge and dining areas to be visually dirty, untidy and malodourous.

"People told us that cleanliness was a concern to them, 'cleanliness shouldn't be like this' and 'cleanliness is a major issue'.

“On the first day of the inspection, it became clear that there was no domestic staff on duty in the upstairs unit, this was highlighted to management who took action to address this.

“We have made a requirement to ensure that these areas are maintained.”

Millview, which is run by Advinia Care Homes Limited, is registered to provide a care service to a maximum of 39 older people with dementia, aged 60 years and over and people with a learning disability aged 60 years and over, and two specifically named younger clients as agreed with the Care Inspectorate.

At the time of the inspection, 35 people were living at the home.

As well as a detailed assessment within each of the categories evaluated, inspectors also highlighted several key messages in the report.

They told how consistent and direct leadership is needed throughout the home to ensure appropriate care delivery.

The Care Inspectorate also said that “people's physical and mental wellbeing needed to be improved and maintained through meaningful interaction and stimulation”.

The service's quality assurance systems were also said to need to support a culture of continuous improvement.

Another key message explained that sufficient numbers and skill mix of appropriately qualified staff needed to be on duty at all times.

To prepare for the inspection, the Care Inspectorate reviewed information about the service, including previous inspection findings, registration information, information submitted by the service and intelligence gathered since the last inspection.

In making their evaluations of the service, inspectors spoke with six people using the service and observed interactions between residents and staff.

They also spoke with seven family members and 15 members of staff and management, observed staff practice and daily life, reviewed relevant documents and spoke with one visiting health professional.

A spokesperson for Advinia Care Homes Limited said: "We acknowledge the recent findings of the Care Inspectorate with regards to Millview Care Home.
