East Renfrewshire Council's road network has improved by 3.7 per cent, according to new figures from the Scottish Road Maintenance Condition Survey.

The annual Scottish Road Maintenance Condition Survey reviews around 27 per cent of the council’s 487.2km network to calculate a Road Condition Indicator (RCI).

This measure records defects on the length of the roads examined and grades them in red, amber or green, with red and amber expressed as a percentage of the total network.

A backlog calculation is also made, estimating the cost of immediately resolving all the red and amber defects.

The Scottish Road Maintenance Condition Survey reported a decrease in red or amber-marked defects from 39.1 per cent in 2019 to the current score of 35.4 per cent.

These recent figures rely on surveys carried out in 2021 and 2022 for A, B and C class roads, alongside a four-year average from 2019 to 2022 for residential roads.

The council’s current estimated backlog cost stands at £27.3 million, an improvement of 11.3 per cent on the 2019 figure.

The total 2023 backlog cost for all local authorities increased by 16.3 per cent.

In the 2019/20 budget, the council allocated an additional £15 million for road improvements over five years, resulting in the enhancement of 172 roads and 57 pavements.

An extra £17.5 million has been committed starting from 2024/25, which has benefitted 51 roads and eight pavements in this current financial year.

Councillor Danny Devlin, convener for Environment and Housing, said: "It’s great to hear that the council is continuing to upgrade its road infrastructure year on year.

"Our roads network is absolutely vital and it’s clear that the additional capital investment into our roads and pavements which began in 2019/20 is making a real difference.

"Our roads are so important to our residents and the council is committed to continuing to make these improvements to our residential roads."
