Glasgow's M8 is set to be closed this weekend to allow major works to take place.

Amey - on behalf of Transport Scotland - will be carrying out essential refurbishments of the Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges that span the motorway between Junction 21 (Seaward Street) and Junction 23 (Ibrox).

The work will take place from Monday, July 1 until Friday, December 20.

The company says a 'programme of maintenance' is required to ensure the 50-year-old structures continue to operate safely.

As part of the scheme, to allow the removal of the spans from the site, the road firm has said part of the M8 will be closed overnight in both directions this weekend.

The closure will be in place between Junction 19 (Anderston) and Junction 24 (Helen Street).

The section of the road will be shut from:

  • 6pm on Saturday, August 3 until 1pm on Sunday, August 4.

During the closures, motorists are being urged to 'avoid travelling' in the area and to 'plan ahead'.

Announcing the news, the firm has said to mitigate disruption to road users, the suspended spans of the footbridges will be removed for refurbishment off-site.

This will allow the remaining works to in-situ spans and supports to be undertaken using nightshift lane closures of the M8.

This will avoid the need for continuous traffic management to be in operation on the road during peak travel periods.

During this weekend's closure, signed diversions will be in place for drivers.
