MORE than 4,000 visitors relished an event-packed day at the UK’s largest onshore windfarm, ScottishPower Renewables’ Whitelee.

Guests had the opportunity to explore the windfarm with the help of the operations and maintenance team, gaining detailed insights into how the mammoth windfarm functions.

Demonstrations of renewable energy generation and interactive exhibits backed by the Glasgow Science Centre were on offer at the event on June 9.(Image: PR) ScottishPower Renewables' in-house ecologists also played a pivotal role, providing information about the ongoing conservation efforts on the massive site that has a variety of species living in it.

Interested visitors were given guided tours to see these habitats for themselves.

The event also let people explore the 130km trails of this colossal site, constantly open to walkers, runners, cyclists, and horse riders.

Several exhibitors, including organisations such as WWF, Cancer Research UK, and Scottish Wildlife Trust, were part of the annual event.

Their recurrent participation is intended to inspire future generations to seek careers in STEM and environmental conservation.

The event, marked with piping and drumming by the ScottishPower Pipe Band, a visit to an animal petting zoo, and offerings from local food vendors, was widely enjoyed by families, thus proving to be a grand success once again.

Joe Mitchell, SPR's operations and maintenance director, said: “Our community day is a fantastic way to connect with the public and showcase everything Whitelee has to offer.

"It’s much more than a windfarm and we’re thrilled to see such a strong turnout and enthusiastic support for this popular event at our much-loved site, which generates enough clean energy to power the equivalent of more than 350,000 homes.”
