1. Games buzz just what the doctor ordered

Barrhead News: BARRHEAD was well and truly gripped by Commonwealth Games fever as the event entered a second week. Team leader for spectator services Pauline Sim was blown away by the reaction to the games. The Cross Stobs woman, a nurse and medical student, said: “Every time I leave the house in my Clydesider uniform I get a lot of smiles and hellos from people around Barrhead. The atmosphere around the games is absolutely electric.”

2. It’s all plain sailing for Johnnie and the band

Barrhead News: A Barrhead band were plying their trade on the high seas on the world’s last ocean-going steam paddle ship. The trio of good friends that made up The Fantastic Equinox spent their Saturdays entertaining crowds on pleasure cruises onboard the PS Waverly. 

3. Modest Tammy gets her reward

Barrhead News: A Neilston teenager won two awards for her caring work in the community. Tammy Reynolds received both the East Renfrewshire Young Carer of the Year title and the prestigious Diana Award. 

4. Winger hails Arthurlie for giving him his first chance

Barrhead News: After shining on his competitive debut for new club East Fife, former Arthurlie winger Caolan McAleer heralded his time at Dunterlie as the ‘best step I ever took.’ The 20-year-old enjoyed a season-long loan spell in Barrhead before going on to enjoy first-team football in the senior ranks.

5. Arthurlie set Barr high with victory

Barrhead News: Arthurlie produced a quality performance as they out-classed east region side Bathgate Thistle. The first goal of the game came when Kevin Green hit a pinpoint diagonal pass the length of the field where Richie Barr watched the ball drop over his shoulder before cracking a half volley that looped over the helpless keeper and into the Bathgate goal.

6. Crowds line the streets in Neilston for Queen's Baton Relay

Barrhead News: The Baton was carried through the village by locals who were chosen for their outstanding contributions to the community, including local man Richard Spearey, seen here riding a specially adapted bike.
