A Brownies group based in Newton Mearns raised close to £1,600 for new camping equipment during its 100th birthday celebration.

1st Mearns Brownies, part of Girlguiding East Renfrewshire, rang in the celebrations with a coffee morning, with parents, former members, and leaders.

Fundraising stalls from the event included a raffle, home baking, and a tombola.

The unit also planted a commemorative tree in the grounds of Mearns Kirk church, their meeting place since March 1924.

Local MP Kirsten Oswald, provost Mary Montague, and former members and supporters attended the celebration.

Ms Oswald, MP for East Renfrewshire, said: "At Westminster, I tabled an Early Day Motion to mark this significant anniversary, and I was delighted to present copies to the Brownies and their leaders."

Brownie leaders Rhona McCalman and Heather Martin said: "We raised almost £1600 which will go towards the cost of new tents and camping equipment as well as other trips later on in the year.

”We can’t thank everyone enough for their support - thanks to everyone who helped out on the day, all the local businesses who donated raffle prizes, and people who turned up with donations and home baking."

Louise Lightbody, county commissioner, said: “Congratulations to all the girls and volunteers at 1st Mearns Brownies on reaching this amazing milestone together.

"And a huge thank you to all the volunteers past and present, for their time and dedication to the unit.

“Although Brownies has been going for 100 years at 1st Mearns, there is a real need for volunteers to make sure we can keep delivering Rainbows, Brownies and Guides across Newton Mearns for another 100 years.”
