1. Brave youngster got the chop to help those battling cancer
A brave young girl decided to cut off some of her hair off to help youngsters with cancer.
Eight-year-old Lauren Cosgrove was joined in the salon chair by her sister Erin.
The youngster had her hair cut in Barrhead by her hero St Mirren player John McGinn.
2. Kids dig deep to fill time capsules at Asda
Two time capsules were buried by local schoolchildren in the run-up to the opening of Asda in Barrhead.
The supermarket giant had launched a competition earlier in the year asking primary school pupils to submit their suggestions for items relevant to life in the town in 2014.
The box filled with the suggested items was then put together.
An old box, filled in 1994, which was removed temporarily to allow construction at the site was buried alongside it.
3. Kids battle for first place at sports day
Springhill and Auchenback Primary School pupils took over the Cowan Park for the biggest sporting event in their calendar.
Youngsters took part in dozens of traditional sports in Barrhead’s biggest open green space.
The egg and spoon race made a return while pupils tackled the mini hurdles, sack race, and the 50m sprint to take the top prizes as classes went head to head.
4. Almost time to let the Games begin
East Renfrewshire was continuing its Commonwealth and Queen’s Baton Relay countdown in superb sporting style.
Youngsters took part in a day of activities in the run-up to the Games.
Hundreds of pupils competed in hockey, basketball, table tennis, athletics, rugby, squash, and bowls over the course of a day as part of the council’s sports team roadshow.
5. Town goes wild for spruced-up garden
Barrhead residents had the chance to get green fingers following the unveiling of a new £120,000 project in the north of the town.
The transformation of the former sewage works in an old industrial area of the town which at the time was home to Barrhead companies Shanks and Spillers dog food, featured a 10,000 square metre park and gardens.
The area, for use by the wider community, included three massive sewage tanks which were to be used as experimental wildflower planters.
6. Kids saddle up on new cycle link
A new £390,000 cycle link had opened in Barrhead.
The new path was a joint project between East Renfrewshire Council, Renfrewshire Council, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, and Sustrans.
The 600m route, for pedestrians as well as cyclists, ran along Caplehill Road into Renfrewshire’s Brownside Braes.
