1. Your chance to hail a real community hero
A new special set of awards was launched by MP Jim Murphy and Barrhead News readers were to be given the chance to nominate a community champion. The awards aimed to recognise the fantastic work and dedication of hundreds of volunteers throughout Barrhead and East Renfrewshire.
2. Teens qualify as dance leaders
More than 20 local girls took a leap forward in their careers after qualifying as dance leaders. Pupils from all six of East Renfrewshire’s high schools trained in their level one Award in Dance Leadership. All the girls passed the course which enabled them to lead community groups in dance classes, while supervised by a fully qualified teacher.
3. Head pupils get glimpse at school
Head boys and girls from East Renfrewshire’s secondary schools got the chance to see inside the area’s newest school - by special invitation. Eastwood High head boy and girl Mark Kyle and Bianca Delgadia asked their fellow leaders to their school to showcase their fantastic new building.
4. Hot prize was handed over by firefighters
One lucky Barrhead resident won a bumper-sized Tesco hamper and a visit from Barrhead’s firefighters. Auchenback resident Agnes Ramirez won the basket of goodies after entering her name into a prize draw organised by Tesco and Scottish Fire and Rescue. The hamper included everything from assorted jams and biscuits to canned foods and accessories.
5. Pupils take part in spectacular school dance showcase
Around 180 children and young people from across East Renfrewshire took part in a dancing competition open to every school in the area.
6. Park day out was egg-stra fun
Dozens of egg-static youngsters celebrated Easter with an extravaganza of fun at the Cowan Park. Organised by the Dams to Darnley Country Rangers, the popular event was attended by youngsters and their parents from all over East Renfrewshire, as they took part in Easter themed games and activities.
