1. New store takes shape as frame completed
Barrhead's councillors were onsite at the town’s new, under-construction Asda store to mark the completion of the store’s steel frame. They were given a guided tour of the £22 million supermarket site by representatives from Asda and contractors Barr Construction to see how works had progressed since the start of the year.
2. Schoolgirl proves she’s a cut above the rest
A Barrhead youngster was inspired by a critically ill child to donate her long hair to charity. Seven-year-old Hannah Jeans cut 15ins off her hair in aid of Make-A-Wish, the charity that makes the dreams of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions come true.
3. Senior council officers retire from their posts
Two of East Renfrewshire Council’s most senior officers retired from their posts. Director of finance Norie Williamson and chief social work officer Safaa Baxter stepped down.
4. Kids learn tricks of dramatic arts trade
Budding actors and production staff were given the chance to develop their skills at Uplawmoor Primary. Pupils at the school were taught the tricks of the trade at drama workshops hosted by Bazooka Arts’ Zoe Brook.
5. Hundreds helped by 500k training project
Young Enterprise's exciting new £500,000 training academy for young people was officially opened in Rouken Glen Park.
6. School goes green to secure eco award
Little eco-warriors at a Barrhead school went all out to earn a prestigious award. Springhill and Auchenback Primary pupils scooped a fairtrade award – and had their hopes pinned on landing the coveted school eco flag. Jim Murphy MP was on hand to present pupil Leon Cooper with a certificate after he was one of three winners in an East Renfrewshire wide competition.
7. Children's writer shared inspiration with youngsters
Neilston youngsters were given a taste of poetry in motion when renowned Scottish poet James Carter paid a visit. James, a best-selling children’s author, was touring East Renfrewshire schools as part of the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour. And youngsters even got their hands on some free books as part of the visit.
