West Scotland MSP Paul O’Kane has insisted that “all options must be explored” to ensure that Neilston retains a post office.
The politician said that its “essential for one of these options to be taken by a retailer” and described it as a “fantastic opportunity” for the successful applicant.
He stressed that if there are not any applicants by the application deadline of the February 21, he will set up a meeting for local residents and businesses to attend to “arrive at a solution for Neilston."
Mr O’Kane told the Barrhead News: “It’s only been a matter of days since the Post Office in Neilston closed but we can’t allow it to be anything other than a temporary closure.
“I am very hopeful that there will be a number of ambitious applicants who can see the potential in taking on the job – it is undoubtedly a fantastic opportunity.”
Following the recent resignation of the postmaster, the temporary closure of the Main Street branch began on Saturday, January 13.
Until a new postmaster is found, the nearest alternatives are Barrhead Post Office, in Cross Arthurlie Street, and Auchenback Post Office, in Aurs Drive.
Post Office have published an advert for potential new owners to apply to.
As previously mentioned, the closing date is marked for February 21, however, the postal service state the application window “may close early if sufficient interest is registered."
The advert also states that Post Office Ltd is looking for a successful retailer to either purchase the current business or incorporate a Post Office Local into their existing or proposed business.
“If the February 21 passes without a successful applicant then I will be inclined to host a meeting for local residents and local businesses to attend so that we can arrive at a solution for Neilston,” added Mr O’Kane.
“I sincerely hope it doesn’t have to come to that but it’s sensible to be looking ahead.
“If the applications don’t materialise I am prepared to explore all options to ensure this vital service remains in Neilston.”
