A LOCAL politician has claimed the UK Conservative Government "have completely abandoned people in Scotland" after the King's Speech.
East Renfrewshire's MP Kirsten Oswald hit out following the speech as she said it contained "no help with the cost of living and no new powers for the Scottish Parliament".
Before it, the SNP party, which Oswald represents, called for the transfer of powers over energy, employment, and the economy to enable the Scottish Parliament to go further to help families with the cost of living and boost economic growth.
Kirsten Oswald MP said: “This threadbare King’s Speech shows the Tories are bereft of ideas and have completely abandoned people in Scotland.
“While the SNP is helping families with a council tax freeze and progressive policies like the Scottish Child Payment, the Tories are offering no help at all with the cost of living and no new powers for the Scottish Parliament - showing why independence is essential to deliver economic growth and boost household incomes.
“Millions of households in Scotland are suffering from a Westminster-made cost of living crisis."
Speaking after the King’s Speech, Scottish Secretary Alister Jack said: “The first King’s Speech in more than 70 years was a very special moment, and I was honoured to be in the Chamber for it.
“This is an ambitious UK Government legislative programme, which delivers for people in Scotland and right across the whole of the UK.
“Our programme builds on the Prime Minister’s priority to grow the economy, fully secure the benefits of Brexit, and build the most competitive and supportive environment for businesses to capitalise on new technologies.
“Our new oil and gas licensing scheme will boost our country’s energy security, and protect vital jobs in the North East of Scotland.
“These measures will help ensure that the whole of the UK is more prosperous, more innovative and more secure.”
