'Significant' sewage pollution has been detected near East Renfrewshire, it has been revealed. 

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) disclosed the pollution incident, which is present on the Kittoch Water in the northwest of South Lanarkshire to East Kilbride, and the downstream White Cart Water, which runs between East Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire. 

SEPA has announced that they are continuing to monitor the situation, which is currently ongoing. 

The agency also confirmed that an investigation has been launched following the mass detection of pollution. 

A spokesperson for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency said: "SEPA are aware of a significant sewage pollution incident on the Kittoch Water and the downstream White Cart Water. 

"SEPA officers will continue to monitor the situation but are unable to comment further due to an ongoing investigation.

South Lanarkshire Council confirmed that they have had no reports of any issues with pollution in the area at this point. 

Glasgow City Council were also contacted for comment. 

Scottish Water has been taking temporary measures to reduce and cease the discharge.

A spokesperson from the corporation said that the issue has brought 'many challenges for the team'.

They added: "We are carrying out emergency works following the collapse of sewer pipe infrastructure in a field near Philipshill Waste Water Treatment Works in East Kilbride. This resulted in wastewater entering the Kittoch Water.

"Measures were put in place as soon as possible to help reduce any environmental impact, with additional mitigations introduced as the works have progressed. We continue to liaise with SEPA, and ecologists have been working with our team to ensure wildlife in the area is protected.

"Since the issue occurred, we have been working round the clock to assess the full extent of the damage and to plan effective repairs. With steep slopes and dense woodland, the topography of the land where the issue has occurred has brought many challenges for the team.

"This has been further compounded by third-party services in the area which have had to be given full consideration.

"We are carrying out these works as quickly and as safely as possible."

A road closure is in place on a section of Philipshill Road in East Kilbride, to allow work to be carried out.
