A LOCAL politician has welcomed over one million pounds in funding support for families in East Renfrewshire.
It comes after new figures revealed that 2,795 youngsters in the local authority are being supported by the Best Start Foods and Best Start Grant payments from the Scottish Government.
The payments are part of the five key benefits that families may be entitled to from Social Security Scotland.
In the first six months of this year, payments worth £1,095,688 have been paid to residents in the area.
Welcoming the funding boost, Renfrewshire South MSP said: "The Best Start Grant and Best Start Foods payments provide crucial support to families at key stages of their children's lives, and it is excellent to see thousands of families in East Renfrewshire benefitted.
"This is another demonstration of the Scottish Government's commitment to tackling child poverty, now automatically accompanying the Scottish Child Payment following last year's increase to £25.
"This kind of vital support for families in East Renfrewshire is another indication of what is possible with full social security powers."
