AN East Renfrewshire woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year is set to take on a huge challenge to raise cash for a good cause.

Jen Munro is set to take part in the Beatson Cancer Charity’s “Off the Beatson Track” walking event at the end of August.

The annual event is a 10K walk to help raise money for cancer patients and their families.

The 37-year-old is taking part in the event with her 8-year-old son, husband, mum, and mother-in-law, following her cancer diagnosis.

Barrhead News:

Jen said: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer last March and since then have been undergoing active treatment including chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy.

“These treatments have given me the chance to hopefully live a long and healthy life. It hasn’t been without its challenges, but I am so grateful to the NHS and The Beatson for all their care and treatment over the last year and a half.

“Outwith the obvious medical treatment The Beatson has given me, I’ve benefitted from complementary therapies while I’ve been an inpatient after experiencing side effects and frequent cups of tea and chocolate biscuits while I’ve been waiting for appointments or having my treatment, all of which has been available through Beatson Cancer Charity.

Barrhead News:

“They also offer practical support around finances, emotional support, and also fund lifesaving research.

“I thought it was time to give something back now that I’m feeling more fit and healthy.

“A cancer diagnosis is one of the most frightening things to happen to anyone. The moment I was diagnosed will live with me forever, as will the moments when I had to tell my son, my partner, my family, and my friends.

“The work of Beatson Cancer Charity really does help to support patients, carers, and families at their most vulnerable moments.”

The event will be its tenth anniversary and will see over 2,000 participants take part.

It will start at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow on Sunday, August 27 and go past The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre on Great Western Road, via Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and then back to the Riverside Museum to finish.

A festival village will be at the finish line for supporters to enjoy food, and entertainment, and take part in activities.

It will also be hosted by STV’s Laura Boyd and BBC’s David Farrell.

Maisie McCormick, community fundraising manager at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “We’re so excited to be celebrating Off the Beatson Track’s 10-year milestone.

“It’s our flagship event and every year we’re overwhelmed by the support we receive, but this year is set to be the biggest and best event yet with over 2,000 participants and lots of fun and entertainment for all the family on the day.

“Every single walker is helping us support more cancer patients and their families in the west of Scotland over the years to come, so we’re very grateful to everyone who signs up to take part.”
