Network rail has provided more information about works which will see trains to and from Barrhead replaced by buses for the entirety of July.

From Saturday, June 24, to Thursday, August 3, 2023 there will be no trains operating through the station with "all lines closed all day, every day."

Engineers will be working around-the-clock for six weeks to deliver key upgrades as part of the Barrhead Electrification Project.

Plans to fully electrify the Barrhead to Glasgow railway line were given the green light in October 2021.

The multi-million pound project will support passenger and freight services and will also be used as a key diversionary route for cross-border trains.

Passengers boarding at Barrhead station will benefit from greener, more reliable electric trains, with improvements also being made to stations along the route linking the town to Glasgow.

During the line closure this summer, work will be taking place at four stations – Kennishead, Priesthill and Darnley, Nitshill and Barrhead.

Engineers will be making the stations suitable for an electrified railway by making modifications to structures and platforms such as raising the height of bridge parapets (side walls) and adjusting the platform copes (edges of the platform).

Overhead line infrastructure will also be installed during the closure and track renewal works will take place at Barrhead.

Given the scale and complexity of the activities taking place, a short-term closure of the railway is said to be the safest, most cost-effective way to carry-out the works as quickly as possible for passengers and lineside neighbours.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “The electrification of the Barrhead line will mean more reliable and greener journeys for our customers and will help Scotland’s railway reduce our carbon footprint.

“The complexity of the work taking place means closing the line for a short period is the safest and most efficient way to carry-out these vital improvements.

“We understand the inconvenience this will cause to passengers and some lineside neighbours and are working hard alongside ScotRail to keep disruption to a minimum.”

ScotRail announced yesterday that for over a month services on the route will be replaced by buses as Network Rail carries out engineering work "at East Kilbride/Barrhead, closing all lines all day, every day."

"Trains between Glasgow Central and Kilmarnock will not run," added the train operator. "Stations between Pollokshaws West and Kilmarnock will not be served by any train services.

"Crossmyloof and Pollokshaws West will be served by train services between Glasgow Central and East Kilbride.

"Kilmarnock will be served by services to / from Ayr / Dumfries / Carlisle."

From Monday to Saturday during the affected period there will be two replacement buses per hour between Glasgow Central and Kilmarnock.

That will be reduced to an hourly service on a Saturday.

Between Sunday June 25 and Sunday July 2 buses will replace trains between Glasgow Central and Dumfries, rather than Kilmarnock, as a result of additional engineering work.
