East Renfrewshire’s new provost has said she feels “very privileged” to take on the prestigious role.

Councillor Mary Montague replaces Labour colleague Jim Fletcher, who retired from politics at last month’s local elections.

Her position was confirmed last Wednesday night as the new-look council met for the first time since voters went to the polls on May 5.

Councillor Montague, who will be supported by deputy provost Kate Campbell, of the Conservatives, told her fellow elected members: “I will do my best for you in the chamber to facilitate discussion and also to represent the council in civic life in every corner of East Renfrewshire.

“I look forward to working with each and every one of you in doing that.”

All five convener positions went to Labour and independent councillors.

Councillor Andrew Anderson, of Labour, will cover education and equalities, new council leader Owen O’Donnell, also of Labour, will take the environment role and colleague Councillor Katie Pragnell is the new community services and community safety convener.

Councillor Danny Devlin and Councillor David Macdonald, who are both independents, take on the housing and maintenance services position and the social work and health role respectively.
