DOG owners are being urged to control their pets around livestock in East Renfrewshire’s countryside.
Farmers have reported worrying attacks on their sheep by unaccompanied dogs which have been allowed to stray.
Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953, the person in charge of a dog that worries livestock on agricultural land is guilty of an offence and could face a year in jail or a £40,000 fine.
A police spokesperson said: “Livestock includes all farming animals, such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses and poultry.
“A landowner is permitted to shoot your dog if it can be proved that the action was necessary to protect livestock.”
