Monday, May 22 was the 80th anniversary of Arthurlie’s first Scottish Junior Cup win.
Lie hit top form in front of 23,000 at Celtic Park to defeat Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 5-1 in the final writes Robert Burns.
For a club just five years in the grade, it was a fantastic achievement and the Barrhead club had to wait a full 61 years before it tasted success again.
The journey that led to the final at Celtic Park began at Dunterlie Park on September 12, 1936 when Neilston Victoria were beaten 5-1 in the opening round.
A 3-1 win over Lesmahagow in round two set up a marathon encounter against Glasgow giants Petershill.
The sides played out a goalless draw on Boxing Day in Glasgow before meeting in the replay in Barrhead on January 9. A goal from Higgins secured a 1-1 draw and the teams met again seven days later at the neutral Shawfield Park. Arthurlie weren’t to be denied at the third time of asking as goals from Alston, McHarg and Sim saw them ease into the fifth round.
Next up was Blantyre Victoria and McHarg netted the only goal of the game. Glenafton Athletic visited Dunterlie Park on February 27 with a semi-final place up for grabs, Anderson netted a brace to move Arthurlie a step closer to glory. Firhill Park hosted the semi-final as Arthurlie faced up to Morton Juniors, a double from McHarg was enough to send Arthurlie into their first Scottish Cup final.
In the final Arthurlie lined up as follows: Brown, Hamilton, Higgins, Elliot, Bingham, Galt, Alston, Anderson, McHarg, Sim, and Paterson.
Doubles from Anderson and McHarg were added to by another from Sim to wrap up a memorable 5-1 win over Kirkintilloch Rob Roy as Arthurlie lifted the famous trophy for the first time and set off celebrations that lasted in the town for days and weeks.
